Ridgewood is an area located in Queens, New York City. It is located between regions like Maspeth, Middle Village, Glendale, Glendale, and the Brooklyn communities comprising Bushwick and East Williamsburg. The site has historically been part of the Queens-Brooklyn border.
The origin of the name Ridgewood is unclear, but it could have referred to Ridgewood Reservoir, the local geography, or even a road. The British established themselves within Ridgewood during the seventeenth century. Meanwhile, the Dutch moved close to Bushwick. The adjacent settlements caused decades of conflict about the boundaries that later became the boundary of Queens and Brooklyn. Bushwick was rapidly developed during the 19th century. However, Ridgewood was not heavily populated until the beginning of the 20th century, when rowhouses began to be built to cater to the primarily growing German population. Ridgewood has grown more diverse and ethnically diverse from the mid-20th century onwards. The majority of the neighborhood is considered a national and historic city district.
The reason for Ridgewood’s name is not apparent. One theory is that it was derived directly from Ridgewood Reservoir in Highland Park, located in Brooklyn, close to Ridgewood. The reservoir was situated on an incline high in the middle of Harbor Hill Moraine, a terminal moraine stretching across the long-Long Island. Another possible etymological connection is the forest cover surrounding the area before colonialization. The early English colonists identified the moraine as “the “ridge” of Long Island. Ridgewood is located adjacent to Bushwick, Brooklyn, and the two neighborhoods share the same history. Both were initially established by Lenape Native Americans, specifically the Mespachtes tribe (for whom the area named Maspeth was named). In 1638 the Dutch West India Company was granted an agreement with the Lenape. Later, Peter Stuyvesant chartered present-day Bushwick in 1661, under the name Boswijck which means “neighborhood in the woods,” in 17th century Dutch. In the same way, Ridgewood was part of Newtown, one of the first three towns of Queens established in 1661 by the British.

The racial composition of the area was 39.8 percent (27,558) White, 2.0 percent (1,380) African American, 0.1 percent (93) Native American, 7.7 7 % (5,331) Asian, 0.0 0.1% (19) Pacific Islander, 0.3 percent (204) in other races from other races, and 1.1 percent (765) of one or two race. Hispanics or Latinos of any race made up 49.0 percent (33,967) of the total population. The whole of Community Board 5, which includes Maspeth, Ridgewood, Middle Village, and Glendale, was home to 166,924 people in the NYC Health’s 2017 Community Health Profile, with an average life expectancy that was 81.4 years. 20 is roughly equal to the mean life duration, which is 81.2 in every one of the New York City neighborhoods.

Ridgewood is a thriving and settled neighborhood with the housing comprising six-family structures close to the Brooklyn border to two-family and single-family row homes further into Queens, NYC. Ridgewood is distinguished visually by the abundance of brickwork that has been exposed, typical of early 20th-century rowhouses that were built in the neighborhood.
