Long Island City

Long Island City (LIC) is a commercial and residential neighborhood located on the western edge of Queens, New York City. Astoria shares it with the north and borders the East River to the west; Hazen Street, 49th Street as well as New Calvary Cemetery in Sunnyside to the east, and Newtown Creek, which is the only thing that separates Queens, NYC from Greenpoint Brooklyn to the south. It was established as a city by the year 1870. Long Island City was initially the seat of the government in Newtown Town. Town of Newtown before becoming part of the City of Greater New York in 1898. At the beginning of the 20th century, Long Island City became known for its rapid and continuous development of residential areas and gentrification of its parks along the waterfront, and its flourishing arts and culture. The city has many galleries, art establishments, and studio spaces. Long Island City is the eastern endpoint of the Queensboro Bridge, the only automobile route that isn’t tollable connecting Queens with Manhattan. North of the bridge is the Queensbridge Houses. This development is part of the New York City Housing Authority and is the most significant housing facility for public housing within the Western Hemisphere. Long Island City is part of Queens Community District 1 to the north and Queens Community District 2 to the south. It is monitored by New York Police Department’s 108th Precinct. In terms of politics, Long Island City is represented by the New York City Council’s 26th District.

Long Island City, a city on its own, was established in 1870 on the 4th of May following the merger of the Village of Astoria and the towns that comprised Ravenswood, Hunters Point, Blissville, Sunnyside, Dutch Kills, Steinway, Bowery Bay as well as Middleton within Newtown. Town of Newtown. Long Island City had 12,000 to 15,000 people living there at its incorporation. The city’s charter stipulated the mayor to be elected and the ten-member Board of Alderman, with two members representing each of the five wards. City ordinances were passed with a majority vote of those on the Board of Aldermen and the mayor’s signature. Long Island City held its first election on the 5th of July in 1870. The residents chose A.D. Historic Landmark

Alongside The Hunters Point Historic District and Queensboro Bridge, the 45th Road – Court House Square Station (Dual System IRT), Long Island City Courthouse Complex, and United States Post Office are included in the National Register of Historic Places. New York City recognized landmarks include the Pepsi-Cola signs on the East River, Fire Engine Company 258, Hook and Ladder Company firehouse, Long Island City Courthouse, New York Architectural Terra Cotta Company building, and The Chase Manhattan Bank Building.
